Flower crafts for kids encompasses lots more than tissue paper flowers

When people think flower crafts for kids, the first thing they usually think of is tissue paper flowers like you see above. There are however, other flower crafts you can do with children either in a kindergarten or preschool environment or at home that are more creative and a bit different.

#1 Flower collages

Collage ideas are inherent in almost every craft you can choose to do with children. The only thing that makes it different are the materials that you use. I’m sure that you are well aware that flower crafts are pretty much the domain of girls. It won’t be easy to get boys to do flower collages, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

In the case of the flower craft collages above the children were told that it was a flower making activity. They could make one or many flowers. They were given popsicle sticks, pom poms, pipe cleaner, cupcake holders and leaf shapes type of stickers.

You can always change the activity based on what materials you provide for the children and the results will always be different.

#2 Full flower pictures

This flower craft was similar to the collage one above but,a bit more sophisticated. You can see the array of materials I gave the children for this flower picture. For this activity I told the children that they could make aflower picture. I explained that there had to be flowers in the pictuer but, it could be in any form they chose.

Whenever I give more structured directions I also always give a few ideas. This way they can pick and choose what they want.

I showed them a number of flower pictures I had  to use for inspiration and told them that their collage needed to have a flowers or many flowers in it. I told them it can be flowers in a vase, flowers on a windowsill, someone holding flowers, flowers growing in a garden etc.

Below are some of the pictures I got from the calendars that I sued for inspiration.

I told them they could take ideas from the pictures or they could use their own ideas.

These pictures below were of girls about 7 or 8 years old

The ones below were girls a year to three years younger

The one on the left looks quite random but, I remember how the little girl was working on it to get all the sequins to form some kind of petals. You can’t always tell children’s intent by what the finished product looks like.

The trick is to realize that different children will create according to their age level and patience level as well.

#3 What about flower pictures with pre printed pictures

Many children spend much of there time coloring pictures in coloring books and working with other pre printed pictures. There is such a proliferation of preprinted and cut out materials for children to use all over the place.

I normally don’t believe in using any pre printed sort of material with children in art.

One day I received a carton load of calendars from a calendar company to use for art classes and I decided   Hey! Why don’t I see what happens if I combine the pre printed pictures for the kids to use along with adding some materials to make it more creative.

I collected some images that had flowers on them from the  calendars that I had and told the children that they could make a flower garden or anything having to do with flowers. I gave them these images plus some yarn and craftsticks and told them they can cut out the flowers and use the yarn and crafts sticks to add to the pictures

I was disappointed with this activity.

What happened was the kids got so involved with just cutting out the flowers that creativity didn’t come much into play here.

One child actually just cut out a whole piece from a calendar(notice the bear below) and pasted the whole piece of paper onto her paper.

When I mentioned to some of the other children that the assignment did have them also using the crafts sticks and yarn they kind of just pasted some down as in the 2 examples below.

My assessment was that seeing the preprinted pictures and allowing them to use them kind of froze the children s creativity. So as you can see, using pre printed pictures for the kids stifles their creativity and it is much better for their creativity to allow to just use a number of pictures for inspiration.
